Charles Edward Shepard was born May 1, 1921, in Medora, Indiana. He was the third child of Charles Whitlaw Shepard and Dessie Mae Bottorff.


He served in the United States Army during World War II as part of the 81st Medical Battalion. Charlie was a member of the American Legion Post 89 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1925. After the war, he worked as a machine mechanic and was a retiree from Cummins Engine Company. He attended the First Church of the Nazarene in Seymour.


Charles was married four times. His first marriage was to Deloris Imogene Spencer, they met in California while Charles was stationed at Camp Cooke. They married on September 11, 1944, in Eagle Rock, California before moving back to Indiana. They had two sons, Darryl and Dexter. Dee and Charles separated & divorce was granted in 1957.


Charles's second marriage was to Gladys James, they married in December 1957 and moved to Arizona shortly after. Charles & Gladys divorced in April 1970. His third wife was Helen Louise Vaughn, they were wed in May 1970 and were married for 22 years until Helen passed in 1992. In November 1994, Charles married Maxine Fields, who preceded him in death in 2003.


Charles Edward Shepard, 85, passed away Tuesday, March 6, 2007, in Seymour, Indiana at Schneck Medical Center. Services were held at Voss Chapel, in Seymour, Indiana. Burial at the Riverview Cemetery included full military rites conducted by the VFW, American Legion, and Disabled American Veterans.


He was survived by his two sons, two sisters, one brother, six grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren.
