Richard T. Bennett, age 86, of Laurel, passed away at Peninsula Regional Medical Center on Friday, June 7, 2013.

Born in Sharptown, Maryland, on May 15, 1927, Richard was the son of the late Fred and Mary (Howard) Bennett.

Richard proudly served his country in the United States Army. He had a passion for farming and a love for the outdoors, and had been farming for over 55 years. He was a member of Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church, a lifetime member of the Sharptown Fire Department, a member of the American Legion in Sharptown, and a member of the Laurel Farmers Auction Block, and Laurel Grainery.

Richard is survived by his children; Herman "Dickie" Dickerson of Laurel, and his companion Terry Perry of Salisbury, Wayne Dickerson and his wife Doris of Laurel, Nancy West and her husband Steve of Seaford, and Shelley Givens and her husband Jeff of Laurel. Grandchildren; Brian Dickerson, Paula Dickerson Williams, Chad Dickerson, Troy Dickerson, James Dickerson, Adam Dickerson, Melissa West Bradley, Katie West, Scot Givens, Corey Givens, and seven great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Ruth Hall, and brother William Bennett.

In addition to his parents, Richard is preceded in death by his loving wife Helen Mae Bennett, whom passed away on March 18, 2009. He is also preceded in death by his siblings; Fred Bennett, Jack Bennett, Frank Bennett, Alma Miller, Jane Cherrix, Iris Lankford, and Noami Sullivan. A daughter in law Janice Dickerson also preceded him in death.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, June 11, at 2 pm at the Hannigan, Short, Disharoon Funeral Home, 700 West Street, Laurel, Delaware. A viewing will be held from 12-2 pm. Interment will be held at Odd Fellows Cemetery in Laurel.
