MURPHYSBORO - Norman Eugene Wisely, 82, passed away at 3:40 a.m. Saturday, March 16, 2013, at his residence in Murphysboro.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 19, in Elm Street Baptist Church in Murphysboro, where the Midwest Region Drum and Bugle Corp. will provide honors, with the Revs. Charles Allen and Christopher Snider officiating. Burial will be in Pate Chapel Cemetery in Murphysboro, with military services conducted by the American Legion Post 127, VFW Post 7190 and 2605, and the Jackson County DAV Chapter 69. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, at Pettett Funeral Home in Murphysboro, and from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church.
Memorials may be made to Ryan Hummert Memorial (to help build a statue at the memorial of the fireman), 3313 S. Compton, St. Louis, MO 63188; or to Hospice of Southern Illinois, Inc., 204 Halfway Road, Marion, IL 62959.
Norman was born March 31, 1930, in Vergennes, to Otis Wisely and Alta (Connor) Wisely Cottom.
He served in the U.S. Marine Corp., obtaining the rank of Sergeant during the Korean Conflict.
Norman was a bus drive the Bi-State Transit in East St. Louis. He was a mason.
Mr. Wisely was a member and deacon of the Elm Street Baptist Church in Murphysboro. Norman and his wife, Doris, were very active in the nursing home ministry of the church. He was known for playing his harmonica at church and at the area nursing homes.
Norman was a faithful husband, a loving father, a great spiritual leader of his family, and he was a father figure to more than just his own children.
He married Doris Krawczyk Feb. 10, 1951, in Murphysboro, and she survives.
Other survivors include five children and their spouses, David and Elaine Wisely of Donna, Texas, Marsha and Allen Holt of Markesan, Wis., Phil and Sharon Wisely of O'Fallon, Tim and Cheryl Wisely of Fairview Heights, and Ladeana and Kevin Forbis of Longview, Texas; one adopted son, Steve Oliver of Waltonville; 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren and one more great-grandchild due in September; two sisters, Mary Hargett-Hiduk of Peoria, Ariz., and Joyce Lambert of Stanwood, Wash.; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He is also survived by his beloved dog, A. J.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
