John Russell Brooks was the fifth child of Benjamin and Matilda Manville Brooks. He was born March 20, 1824, at Brooks Point. He was the second white male child born in Vermilion County. Upon the second marriage of his mother [his father died while in Dana, Indiana, while helping build a mill on Sugar Creek - he developed ague - a fever, usually malarial, marked by recurring chills. He died there and it was six weeks before word got to his family.] So John, age 13, went to live with the family of John Black for whom he worked for seven years.

On January 5, 1846, at Greenup, Cumberland County, Illinois, he married Louisa Taylor Black, the daughter of John and Anna Black. John and Louisa setted in Grape Creek, east of Westville, and operated a distillery.

They had 10 children:
