Evalyn Sylvia Bennett
August 15, 1915 - September 12, 2008

Middletown, NY

Our dear Aunt Eb died peacefully after an abundant 93 years, on Friday, September 12, 2008 at Orange Regional Medical Center, with her niece, Glady by her side.

She was born August 15, 1915 in North Bergen County, NJ to James and Lottie Maud Bennett.

Evalyn came to Middletown as a small child when her father's death from tuberculosis left her mother, Lottie, with six children to care for alone. They grew up in a small two-story home in Mechanicstown, living with an aunt and uncle.

A progressively deteriorating eye condition from birth kept Evalyn two years behind her classmates in school. Graduating in 1935 from Middletown High School, she was asked to read her essay on "Women's Rights in a 1935 Society" at her commencement program. Quite a racy subject at the time for such a shy and gentle young woman.

Evalyn followed her brothers and sisters and began working at Classy Leather Goods pocketbook factory. She became a trimmer and worked in the cutting room until retirement. She entertained all her co-workers by cutting whimsical silhouettes of people and animals from the scrap leather that fell on the floor.

Evalyn cloaked her shyness by creating crazy, flamboyant costumes and performing skits to entertain her co-workers. "Nora" was a stage name that fondly stuck with friends.

At Classy Leather Goods she made costumes and presented a skit with an original patriotic song about women going to work to help win the war, which made all the local newspapers.

Evalyn's church, The First Baptist Church, on Mulberry Street in Middletown was her lifelong home. As a Sunday School Teacher for many years, she shared her faith and blessed hundreds of children with the stories of the Bible on her felt board with her wonderful cut out flannel Bible characters.

Evalyn loved nature and eagerly awaited the time away at various Christian camps each summer, especially the Pathfinder Lodge. She had the opportunity to share her special skills and celebrate her faith. As a Girl Scout leader she made every meeting exciting, learning how to catch sunfish on a tree branch fishing pole, making mud pies, toasting marshmallows and hot dogs on a stick, and making flower gardens. Not always meeting the Girl Scout criteria, but always fun and engaging.

Above all else, Evalyn was a creative light in the lives of all those who loved her; whether carving soap, crocheting, cutting silhouettes, or baking outrageous cakes, she could engage any child and delight most adults within her reach.

As her brothers and sisters left home to start their families, Evalyn remained behind to care for her mother until her death in the 70's.

In 1982, Evalyn moved to Southwinds Retirement Home. She actively participated as the resident council president and most of all fund raising, thoroughly enjoying sharing all her crafting skills.

As her eyesight diminished she simplified her activities, but not her kindness or sense of humor.

Evalyn remained at Southwinds from 1982 until her death: twenty-six years. Having made her home at Southwinds longer than any other resident gave her much love and kind attention from the entire nursing staff.

Evalyn is survived locally by her niece and caregiver, Gladys Biasi of Florida, NY; nephews, Don and Doug Dodd and their families of Howells, NY; a cousin, Myrtle Bergman of Circleville; great nieces and nephews, and many great-grand and great-great-grand nieces and nephews in Orange County, Texas and California.

Cremation took place at Cedar Hill Crematory, Newburgh, NY.

Evalyn will be buried in the family plot at Circleville Cemetery. A memorial service to honor her life will be held at a future date - to be announced.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Baptist Church, 11 Mulberry St., Middletown, NY 10940, for the meditation garden being created in Evalyn's honor at her family church.

Arrangements are under the direction of Cornelius, Dodd & Connell Funeral Home, Inc. To send condolences, please visit www.connellfuneralhome.com or 845-343-2142.
