Commendation for Distinguished Service Cross:
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Claude E. Cavenee (ASN: 2178440), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company B, 354th Infantry Regiment, 89th Division, A.E.F., near Remonville, France, 1 November 1918. After his platoon commander had been wounded, Sergeant Cavenee took command of his platoon, which was under heavy machine-gun and artillery fire, and, by the force of his own example of bravery, led his men in an attack successfully overcoming the enemy's resistance, in spite of unfavorable odds.
