John P. Case:
John P. Case, aged 81 years, died at his home in Trenton, Monday evening, from the infirmities of age. Mr. Case was a former well-known resident of this section. He was born on the Case homestead near Croton. His wife, who was Miss Amy Bateman, died about three years ago. Mr. Case was a pioneer in the vinegar business and for many years was the owner of the Case Vinegar Works at Clover Hill. This plant was established in 1869 by Zebulon Stout, from whom Mr. Case purchased the business ofter being in the former’s employ for a time From a small plant he built it up to one of the largest in the State. About twenty years ago he sold out to E.B. Vanessa (Elzy Burr Van Atta), of New York, who organized a company known as the New Jersey Cider Vinegar Co., and the plant was moved to its present location near the C. R. r. tracks in Flemington. Last fall this company became associated with the Hillock Corporation, of New York, one of the largest organizations in the business in this country, having wants in Lyons and Mt. Cisco, N.Y., Sterling, Mass, and Cornwall Bridge, Conn. Since retiring from business, Mr. Case has lived in Trenton.
He is survived by one son, Newton Case, of Clover Hill, and a daughter, Mrs. Mary Thatcher, of Somerville, and four brothers and three sisters, Samuel C. Case and Aaron Case, near Flemington; Daniel Case, Trenton; Cyrus Case, Asbury Park; Mrs. Hannah Roe, Reaville; Mrs. Rhoda Ege, Pennington, and Mrs. Louise Stout, Hopewell. He was a member of the West State M.E. church Trenton. The funeral service will be held Thursday afternoon at three o’clock, in the Flemington M.E. church, Rev A.L Fretz officiating. Burial in Prospect Hill cemetery under direction of Wilson & Holcombe.
