All the newspaper accounts of her death are from January, 1883. It seems that the tombstone date of 1882 is probably incorrect. Her death was widely reported in several Kansas papers but there doesn't seem to be much agreement on the actual day.

Inscription
Aged 46y, 11m, 7d. Wife of J.S. Carter. "First white female child born in Kansas." NOTE: There are two stones on this grave. The earlier stone indicates, "Died 1 Jan 1882. Aged 46y, 11m, 7d. Wife of J.S. Carter.
The later one has these dates in-scripted on the stone "1835 – 1883".
