Adelbert was the son of James Canwell and Zipporah (Fuller) Canwell (b. ca. 1842 in Maine). In 1880 he and sister Bertie A. Canwell (b. ca. 1869) lived in Hartford, Oxford County, Maine with their maternal grandparents, Ezekiel Fuller (1809-1896) and Maria Farrar Fuller (1814-1890).
He enlisted as a private in the U. S. Army Hospital Corps on either 09 Mar. 1892 of 21 Nov. 1895 (source gives both dates), and was discharged 20 Nov. 1898.
He married Ida Christina Espland ca. 1897. Their children were (or included):
(1) An infant who died before 1900,
(2) Claude Canwell (1900-1954),
(3) James L. Canwell (1901-1978),
(4) Pearl A. Canwell (1904-1998),
(5) Albert Franklyn Canwell (1907-2002),
(6) Carl D. Canwell (1909-1993),
(7) John Mellon Canwell (1912-2002), and,
(8) Walter Joseph Canwell (1914-2002).
