HOWARD DRAKEFORD GRAY was the son of JOHN PRESLEY GRAY (1822–1915) and his first wife MARGARET E. STAPP (1820-1850) who were married 28 Jan 1845 in Scott Co, Kentucky.

Paternal lineage:
6 Howard Drakeford Gray,
5 John Presley Gray & Margaret E Stapp,
4 John Drakeford Gray (1784-1822) & Nancy Taylor,
3 Presley Gray (1764-1838) & Barbara Cotton,
2 Drakeford Gray (1741-1804) & Jemima Gladden,
1 John Gray (1719-1783) & Elizabeth Drakeford.

MARGARET E. STAPP was the daughter of Revolutionary War Patriot ACHILLES STAPP (1755–1849) of Scott Co, KY & his second wife, ANNA MILLBANKS (1785–1857), widow of John Delph, and daughter of John Millbanks & Mary Barlo.

After Margaret died, JOHN P. GRAY married Miss Julia Cooper Keene (c.1834–c.1864), d/o Marcellus Keene & Nancy "Anna" Cooper of Scott Co, KY. John and Julia moved to Indiana and had 2 children: Keene Presley Gray (1859-1949) and Julia Ann Gray (1863-1952) w/o John Wallace Forrest.

1850 Howard Gray 6, lived with his father John P Gray in Franklin Co, KY
1860- Howard Gray 14 lived in Hittle, Tazewell Co, IL with his father, step-mother, and half-siblings.
1870 - Howard D Gray 24 lived with his paternal uncle Benj. W Gray in Springfield, IL. His father and siblings lived in separate households in nearby Logan Co, IL.
1880 - "Drakeford" Gray 34 lived with his widowed father John P in Rocky Bar, Alturas Co, ID near the home of John's brother-in-law Spencer V. Keene.

19 SEP 1882 Rocky Bar, Alturas Co, ID - Howard married MARY C. "Mamie" FORD (1865-1900). She was the daughter of Augustus Ford (c.1826–c.1875) & Mary E Richardson (1831–1890).

Before the decade ended, Howard was committed to the Idaho Insane Asylum (est. 1885), now known as the Idaho State Hospital South. Mamie divorced Howard and remarried on 31 Oct 1889 to Dr Ephraim Patterson Hayes.

The following tragic story tells everything we know of the remainder of Howard Gray's life and that of his ex-wife.

[3 Mar 1900 Idaho Daily Statesman (Boise)]
"On the 25th of last month the Statesman published a telegraphed story from New York giving the details of the murder in that city of Mrs. E. P. Hayes and Dr. Frank D. Caldwell, her lover, who committed suicide after sending a bullet crashing through the woman's brain.
It develops that the woman was a former resident of this state. She was reared in Rocky Bar, Elmore county, her maiden name being Mamie Ford.
She married Howard Gray of Mountainhome, who was well known to many Boise people. Gray went crazy and was sent to the insane asylum where he died.
Mrs. Gray secured a divorce before Gray's death and married A Patterson Hayes, a dentist. The couple lived in Pocatello from 1889 to 1893. They went from that place to Arizona, thence to Chicago and from there to New York. Mrs. Hayes was a sister to Mrs. Frank P. Ake of Mountainhome."

Howard's grave is unmarked.
A wonderful program is underway at the hospital to mark these graves, and eventually Howard, too, will have a marker.
