Civil rights & founder of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. She was an early Seattle civil rights worker, was a founder of the Christian Friends for Racial Equality and an early board member of the Seattle Urban League. This is an excerpt of an oral history interview of Bertha Pitts Campbell done by Esther Mumford on April 23, 1975 as part of the Washington State Oral History Project. Born in Winfield, Kansas, in 1889, Bertha Pitts Campbell grew up in Colorado. She graduated from Howard University in 1913, began teaching, and married Earl Allen Campbell. Earl and Bertha moved to Seattle in 1923.
