Daughter of Ann Odom and William Bennett of Marlboro County, South Carolina. Mary became the second wife of Andrew Cottingham in 1885. He was 67 and she was 35. Prior to their marriage, Mary kept house for her widowed father and younger siblings. The marriage lasted for 17 years, until Andrew's death in 1903. Mary had no children but was stepmother to Andrew's children with Catherine Sinclair.

As a widow, Mary moved to Lumber Bridge in Robeson County, North Carolina. Her brother Cary and his family lived nearby.

Mary is interred at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Saint Pauls next to her brother who predeceased her in 1921.
