Julia married John W. Leonard on 27 Jul 1837 in Hampton, N.Y. I found four children associated with the couple—Catharine A. (16 Mar 1839 – 13 Dec 1916), George H. (25 Aug 1842 – 19 Apr 1877), Charles (25 May 1844 Jan 1864), and William Eugene (23 Jun 1849 – 27 Feb 1929).

According to William Leonard's death certificate, he was born in June of 1849 in Marshall Co., Indiana, yet neither he nor any other members of the family—John, Julia, Catharine, George, Charles—showed up on the 1850 Census record taken in Marshall County.

Sadly, Julia's husband John Leonard died in 1855 at age 41 and was buried in Ramsey Cemetery in Plymouth, Marshall County. He would miss seeing daughter Catharine wed George N. Welch on 6 Nov 1859 in Marshall Co., Indiana.

The newlyweds appeared together on the 1860 Census, living in West Township, Marshall Co., Indiana. George Welch, aged 26, was farming for a living. Catharine was noted as being 31 on the record, but she was only 21. What wasn't noted was that she was seven months along with son Eugene who arrived two months later in mid-September of 1860. Living with the couple were Catharine's 42-year-old widowed mother Julia Leonard, and Catharine's three younger brothers—George, aged 17, Charles, aged 14, and 10-year-old William.

In the decade before the next census, George and Catharine welcomed five children, and lost three of them—John in 1864, Flora in 1867, and Jennie in 1868. Sad times.

I couldn't find Julia on the 1870 Census, I think because she remarried, wedding John Aldrich on 3 Jan 1863 in Marshall Co., Indiana. A local newspaper posted a non-resident notice in 1865 advising an Eliza A. Aldrich that husband John Aldrich had petitioned for a divorce. I don't know if Eliza and Julia are one in the same, but thought it was worth a mention. Julia's daughter Catharine, husband George Welch and their three children had moved and were living in Centralia, Marion Co., Illinois. Julia wasn't with them.

A year or two after that census was taken, Catharine's family moved back to Indiana. Sadly, on 18 Jan 1875, Catharine was widowed when husband George Welch died at age 41, victim of pneumonia.

Julia reappeared on the 1880 Census, living on Michigan St. in Plymouth, Marshall Co., Indiana. Living with her was granddaughter Catharine Leonard, aged 11. Catharine was the daughter of Julia's son George Leonard and his first-wife Eliza Drew, who had died in 1873. George had remarried a year after Eliza's death and had died three years later in 1877. Living next door was Julia's daughter Catharine and her three children--Eugene, aged 19 and working as a dry goods clerk, Charles, aged 15, and Lillian, aged 10.

Three years after that census, Julia married John McGowen on 16 Dec 1883 in Marshall County.

Julia lived long enough to appear on the now-lost 1890 Census. She died four days after Christmas on 29 Dec 1896.
