MEXICAN WAR

Enlisted from Saukville, WI, on 29 Jul 1847. Just 2 weeks before, “Cyrus Teal Jr”, had enlisted from Saukville – his older brother. They both served in the same unit. Discharged at expiration of service at Covington, KY, on 4 Aug 1848.

When he returned from Mexico, he suffered from malaria, which sapped his health and cost him all of his belongings including his land warrant. He eventually received treatment in Milwaukee. He first learned the trade of tinner, but his health forced him to change his occupation to merchant.

He was visiting Chicago to buy goods for his hardware business, when news of the outbreak of the Civil War was received. He immediately attempted to enlist in the Army, but was rejected after a physical examination – due to his Mexican War disabilities.

During the Civil War, he attempted to enlist a total of 4 times – each time rejected for disability. Twice, he was drafted – only to be rejected.

“His desire to enlist awakened a spirit in among enlisting men and he was elected 1st Lieutenant of Company B, 14th Wisconsin Infantry, but was discovered by the Captain who defeated his purpose by exposing his disability.”

He never served during the Civil War, but he had 4 brothers who did:

Lindsay E. Teal
Sergeant, Company A, 20th WI Infantry
Killed in Action: Prairie Grove, AR

Lorenzo D. Teal
Private, Company B, 8th Missouri Infantry

George Teal
Sergeant, Company B, 14th WI Infantry
2nd Lieutenant, Company A, 37th WI Infantry

Peter Teal
Private, Company B, 14th WI Infantry
