"Doc" Joshua W. Lewis was born about 1825 in Jefferson Co., Alabama, the son of Daniel Lewis and Abigail Brown. He came as a boy with his family to Lonedell, Franklin Co., MO in 1828.

There is some controversy about what his middle initial stood for. The 1958 Lewis family book says his middle name was West, but other descendants say it was Webb or Webster.

He married 18 Apr 1847, Franklin Co., MO, to Diana Margaret Lewis, b. Oct 1829, Franklin Co., MO. She was probably the daughter of James Lewis [the "Virginian"] and Margaret Musick, and doesn't seem to have been related to Joshua. James Lewis "The Virginian" is mentioned in the 1958 Lewis Family Book, but hasn't been otherwise traced. Margaret was the daughter of Ephraim Musick and Nancy "Ann" (McMillan) Musick.

Joshua and Diana seem to have lived their entire married lives in the Lonedell, Franklin Co., MO area.

In 1850, Josua's widowed mother Abigail Lewis was living with them.

According to the 1958 Lewis book, when his older sister Jane died in Texas, her children were raised by her husband Squire Short and his second wife, but when Squire himself died about 1860, Joshua went to Texas to bring Jane's children home to Missouri and he became their guardian.

Joshua probably died soon after July 1870 in Franklin Co, Mo. when he wrote his will.

His grandchildren gave his epitaph in the 1958 Lewis family book, saying that Joshua acquired more land "than all of his brothers combined" (which was not true, but he did have more than either of them). "He cleared the huge tracts of the timber, farmed diligently, and when he died left a large acreage for each of his children."

According to grandchildren as recorded in the 1958 book, he was buried with his parents in the Old Hamilton cemetery.

By 1880, Diana had remarried to John C. Murry and was living next door to her married son Daniel J. Lewis.:
