Dr. Best was born in Mendon, MO, and lived in Columbia, before moving to Kansas City in 1961. He returned to Columbia in 1984. He was a research chemist for the Midwest Research Institute before he retired. He received a bachelor's degree from Central Methodist College, Fayette, MO, and a master's degree and a doctorate degree in physical chemistry from the University of Missouri-Columbia. He was a member of the Sigma Xi and the American Chemical Society. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War.
