He was the son of Louisa Jane Beetley Smeltzer and James M. Smeltzer.
Prior to moving to Madison County, Iowa in the late 1860's or early 1870's the family had lived since the late 1830's in Knox County, Illinois in or just north of Galesburg, IL. The family owner property on the SE edge of present day Galesburg in the 1850's and later some family lived near the town of Rio, Illinois to the north of Galesburg. Prior to living in Knox County the family had lived for a short period in "Undistributed" Crawford County, Indiana (1830 federal census) and prior to that in Hart County (earlier recorded as Barren County) Kentucky near Munfordville and Horse Cave. Some have attributed ancestors of this family, along with the Logsdon family ... relatives by marriage ... with the first discovery of the Mammoth Cave complex near Horse Cave and Munfordville, KY.
