Tom Carrerow-Chacon lived by these words: "Service to humanity is the best work of life!" He was born March 6th 1946 in San Jose California and died peacefully in Santa Cruz California June 7th 2005 surrounded by his family. He was 59 years old.
A Santa Cruz County resident for 42 years, He attended Andrew Hill High School in San Jose and in his junior year transferred to Santa Cruz High where he played on the football team and was a photographer for the yearbook, a candy striper and was in the Naval Reserve program in school. At the end of football season Tom joined the Navy, and served in Viet Nam from 1964 to 1968 as a Boatswain's mate. He met Elizabeth Anderson in 1964 and they were married in 1969, moved to Prescott Arizona. Where he worked as a sheriff's deputy and joined the local Jaycees. His first daughter Kathryn was born there and he attained some immortality when he appeared as an extra in the movie "Junior Bonner."
Returning to Santa Cruz in 1971, Tom continued his activities in Jaycees, joining the Santa Cruz Jaycees, and during a Jaycee event, Toys for Tots, his second daughter, Mary was born. Over the years he was involved in many organizations, including the Sea Scouts, Pop Warner football, The Santa Cruz Band Review, The Jaycee Tigers, E Clampus Vitus and the Santa Cruz chapter of the American Red Cross. As a Red Cross volunteer, he volunteered hundreds of hours during the 1982 Northern California Floods. Tom served as the Mass Transportation Coordinator throughout the county following the Loma Prieta Earthquake.
He lived for several years in Newport Washington and joined the Spokane chapter of the American Red Cross, Search and Rescue and the Sea Explorers.
Tom is survived by his 2 daughters, Kathryn Hillman and Mary Chacon of Santa Cruz, father and stepmother Al and Alice Carrerow of San Jose, brother, Jack Carrerow of Lake Tahoe, sisters, Linda Oliver of Montigue, Peggy Sharpe of Santa Rosa, and Kristine Carrerow of Santa Clara. He is also survived by his half brothers, John Chacon of San Jose and Luiz Chacon of Nebraska. Half sisters, Lora Allen of Modesto and Alice Hartley of Morgan Hill, and four step brothers Gary, Terry, Wayne and Alan Conroy, His two grandsons, Charles and Marcus Hillman of Santa Cruz and 23 nieces and nephews.
Tom is preceded in death by his mother, Geraldine Chacon who died in 1997 and stepfather Cruz (Chuck) Chacon who died in 2002.
