James Calvin Fitzsimmons passed away unexpectedly at Saint Mary's Regional Medical Center in Reno, NV on May 27, 2013 with his family by his side.

"Fitz," as he was known to his friends and family, was born in Olympia Washington January 2, 1935 to Ralph and Helen Fitzsimmons. His family moved to Alaska where his father was employed with the Standard Oil Company. Fitz's father died in a shipping accident when Fitz was 11 years old and he, his mother and two sisters returned to Tacoma, WA where he attended school and graduated from Stadium High School in 1954. A talented athlete, he played several sports in high school and college and was best well known for his abilities as a pitcher. He attended the College of Puget Sound, Boise Junior College and the University of Oregon (Go Ducks!) where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education in 1959. He was a member of Theta Chi Fraternity and frequently shared many great college memories around the campfire with family and friends.

Fitz married his high school sweetheart, MaryAnne Murphy, September 16, 1960 and remained married and devoted to her until her death in 1994. They celebrated 33 years of happiness while raising two children and dedicating their time as school boosters, avid boaters and campers and enjoying time at their dream cabin in Grapeview, WA. He remarried Ruth White of Fall River Mills, CA on May 10, 1997 and enjoyed 16 years of love, blissful travels and adventures with Ruth by his side. Fitz was blessed to have had two wonderful marriages and an ever-growing family that simply adored his giant personality and the love he shared.

Fitz was employed by the Standard Oil Company of California for 15 years and spent the majority of his career in Washington and Alaska. He retired from Standard Oil in 1976 and relocated to Reno, NV where he was employed by Bi-State Petroleum until his retirement in 2000.

Fitz will always be remembered for his humor and positive outlook on life. Our most cherished memories include the thousands of hours enjoyed around a campfire telling stories and watching the sun come up. Fitz was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather and he will be deeply missed by all.

Fitz was preceded in death by his wife MaryAnne, his mother Helen, father Ralph and step-father Douglas Prescott.

He is survived by his wife Ruth, his daughter Lisa Dettling (Charlie), son Jim Fitzsimmons (Dalene), step-sister Jackie McTee (Charles), stepsons, Ron Van Dyke (Julie) and Terry Van Dyke, grandchildren, and many extended family members.

A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, June 2 at 3:30 at St. Luke's Lutheran Church at 3835 Lakeside Drive in Reno. Gravesite ceremonies will be held later in June in Tacoma, WA at Mountain View Cemetery.
