Mrs. D. A. Wiggins

Elizabeth Watkins Wiggins, 84, passed away at her home in Emmett, July 31st, 1940. She was born February 28, 1856, the daughter of a veteran of the Civil War, and at one time in recent years member of a family of five living generations, Mrs. Wiggins death brought to a close a record of pioneering that covered a trail from the south, through the western plains, Oregon, Washington and Idaho, at a period in history when covered wagon and destruction by Indians was everyday history.

In 1861 she crossed the plains with her mother and they were among the first settlers in Baker county, Oregon.

She was married to Alfred DeLoss Short of Vancouver, Washington, whose parents donated the Esther Short park to that city.

Subsequent to his death she married David A. Wiggins and has resided in Emmett the past 23 years.

She leaves to mourn her death besides her husband, the following children: Alfred DeLoss Short, Jr. of Arkansas; Mrs. Ora J. Horton of Medford, Oregon, Mrs. Lelia Spharr of San Antonio, Texas, Mrs. Minnie A. Limbaugh of Portland, Oregon; and Mrs. Edna B. Burns of Denver, Colorado; also several grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and a brother C. D. McCurry, of LaGrande, Oregon.

Funeral services were held in the Buckmun funeral chapel Friday afternoon and were in charge of the Nazarene church.
