Charles is the son of Mary Sangston and Charles Robert Gwyn. He received his Medical Degree from school in Baltimore that later became the University of Maryland.His military service was to help organize the 26th Virginia Regiment and was Assistant Surgeon, promoted to Surgeon on Battlefield at Sailors Creek. He married Margaret Booth Taliaferro in 1868 and they had 8 children. All but one were buried at Lakeview Cemetery.
