Hellen Hughes Blasnek
September 30, 1921 ~ May 26, 2013

Hellen Hughes Blasnek, aged 91, died peacefully on May 26, 2013 at the Grand Court of Mesa.

Hellen was born September 30, 1921 in Samaria, Oneida County, Idaho, the daughter of Rowland Robert Hughes and Florence Merrill Tungate. She was strongly influenced as a child by her maternal grandmother who was a gentle woman of Indian heritage.

Hellen worked during WWII as a telephone operator and was briefly recruited by the military to serve as a spy, the legend of which made for some fun family stories. In 1944, Hellen married Martin George Blasnek. At the end of the war, they settled in San Diego, California and finally in Scottsdale, Arizona where they raised their 3 children: Mark, Steven and Cheryl. Once married with children, Hellen devoted herself to her family and worked outside the home only for a short time.

Hellen was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving faithfully in many different areas of the church, including the Primary (children's organization), Young Women, Relief Society (women's organization) and twice as a temple worker. She especially loved going to camp with the Young Women and working in the temple. In her later years, Hellen became interested in genealogy and worked diligently to research her own ancestors as well as Marty's family progenitors. Her unwavering faith in Jesus Christ brought her great joy, sustained her during trials and afflictions, and was a great blessing to those around her.

Family and friends were Hellen's passion and delight. She was the spiritual backbone of her family, exemplifying love, nurturing and service to others, especially her children. Hellen also enjoyed an especially close relationship with her two sisters and their children. Marty and Hellen were also known to open up their home to shelter family and friends for short or extended periods of time.

The family took many vacations, enjoying touring much of the United States. Multiple times each year, they traveled to Southern California to spend holidays with their extended family. In later years, Hellen traveled the world with Marty, often vacationing together with her oldest sister and her husband or with Marty's company.

Hellen also loved to read, choosing to spend evenings reading rather than watching television. Her favorite author was Louis L'Amour and she owned all of his western novels.

Hellen lost Marty in 2003 and lived in her home until she was 90 when, requiring 24/7 care, she moved to Grand Court of Mesa. She is survived by her two youngest children, 7 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and a number of nieces, nephews and close friends. She was also preceded in death by her eldest son, Mark, and two granddaughters.

A memorial service for Hellen will be held at 10:00am Saturday, June 1 at the LDS Church located at 1850 North Stapley in Mesa, AZ (85203). A private graveside service for family members will be held at the V.A. National Memorial Cemetery in Phoenix, Arizona.

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages memorial donations be made to the Arthritis Foundation in Hellen's name.
