Siskiyou Pioneer Has passed away
A.D. Bartle died in his Redding home at 6:0'clock this morning
Abram Dennis Bartle a pioneer of Siskiyou county, died in his home in this city at 6 o'clock this morning. He had been ill for several months with a malady for which there is not cure. He clung to life tenaciously and was hopeful until the last.
A. D. Bartle was born June 22, 1847, in Boone county, Ill and was consequently a little over sixty-five years of age. He came to California forty years ago and went through all the hardships incident to the life of a pioneer. He was one of the first white men to settle in the McCloud river country and blaze the way for the great lumber industry. He was a timber cruiser and knew the McCloud river county like a book. At different times he owned or controlled large tracts of timer. He built the Bartle hotel in McCloud. Bartle the eastern terminus of the McCloud river railroad was named for him. He owned the ranch where the town of Bartle stands. Mr. Bartle did considerable pioneering in Modoc and Eastern Shasta counties. He located some coal mines in the McCloud river country and always had great faith in their value when opened to a cheap transportation.
Mr. Bartle moved to Redding three years ago and bought the home where he died. For a short time he was in partnership with J. D. Wheeler in dealing in timber land but for the last two years he had live retired.
The pioneer was highly respected by all who knew him. He was man of strict integrity and his word was good everywhere. He was of a quiet retiring disposition modest to a fault, but a sterling friend and a man who knew not how to wrong anyone.
Besides his wife now left a widow he leaves a sister, Mrs. Mary Hensley who lives in Siskiyou county.
Mr. Bartle was a member of the Redding Lodge of Elks. The funeral will be held from the lodge rooms at 2:30 Thursday afternoon. Burial being made in the Redding Cemetery.
