According to "The Virginia Regimental Histories Series, (1987)" the following information is recorded for Spotswood Perkins Bowles:
"Enlisted as Private", "Enlisted into D Company, 44th Infantry (Virginia)", and "Surrendered while serving in 44th Infantry (Virginia) on Apr 9 1865 at Appomattox Court House, VA".
My original data indicated that Spotswood Perkins Bowles died on September 2, 1862. Thomas Daniels, another FindAGrave contributor, added the following information about Spotswood on November 12, 2008:
"I show the date of death for Spottswood Perkins Bowles as May 28, 1895 ... I believe it [the death date] came from the Goochland Historical society ... Spottswood surrendered at Appomattox C. H. 4/9/1865, therefore he could not have died in 1862."
In a second message on November 13, 2009 from Thomas Daniels, he has found the source of Spotswood's 1895 death date. His death date is listed as May 28, 1895 in the book, "Grave Sites and Cemeteries in Goochland County, Virginia; 1990", by Ann K. Hamner, on page 103∼Engraved fieldstone, just outside of the cemetery fence. This is likely the original stone, later a CSA stone was placed.
