Bessie J. Avery married Arthur George Hobson in 1906 in Meriden, Connecticut. After having two children, Arthur was laid off from his job. Bessie's aunt and husband offered a job to Arthur in their Portland, Oregon shoe store, so in 1912 off to Portland they went. Two more children followed. In the early 1920s Bessie became active in Eastern Star, where, in 1929, she had risen to the position of Worthy Matron, or presiding officer. Sensing her days were numbered, she and Arthur traveled back home to Connecticut allowing Bessie to see old friends and relatives. While on that visit, she passed on Mother's Day, 1944.
