Born in Christburg, Prussia, Germany, Mr. Melzer was a financier. He owned Melzer Brothers Soap Manufacturing Company. He was associated with Thomas A. Edison and experimented with making phonograph records. He later sold his formula to Columbia Phonograph Company. He donated the water fountain located at First Avenue & Pennsylvania Streets.

There is some discrepancy in the date of death for Mr. Melzer. He disappeared from Deaconess Hospital on 29 September 1923 and was found in the Ohio River near the Boat Club on 2 October 1923, an apparent suicide.
