James worked for Westmoreland Coal Company at Wyano, PA until he lost his left arm in an auto accident on his way to work in 1939. After that, he was self employed until going to work for Westinghouse Air Brake Company in 1944. He was employed by this Company until an accident near his home claimed him on Feb. 21, 1959.

"Jas. Balentine Loses Arm In Bad accident" - James Balentine, 39, of West Newton, R. D. 1 had his left arm amputated above the elbow Tuesday morning about 7:30 o'clock in the Westmoreland hospital, Greensburg, where he was taken following an automobile accident on the Milbell road near Yukon. Mr. Balentine's automobile sideswiped the car driven by George Albright, also of West Newton. His left arm was so badly crushed that amputation was necessary. Mr. Albright escaped injury. The injured man was given a blood transfusion, his mine partner being the blood donor. He is a brother of F. C. and Grover Balentine and Mrs. Arthur Hepler of West Newton. At the hospital Mr. Balentine's condition is reported as fair.
