Noted Educator Succumbs at 89

Charles Henderson Friend, from whom the C.H. Friend Elementary School here took its name, passed away at his home at Drakes Branch last Friday after a short period of declining health. He was 89 years old and one of the state's oldest educators.

He was principal of the local high school from 1903 until his retirement in 1942, and when the former high school was built on the corner of Peach Avenue and Hodges Street, it adopted his name.

This school burned to the ground in late 1936 and the present C.H. Friend Elementary School, until 1952 a high school, was built the following year. It, too, honored the educator by bearing his name.

He was called back from retirement during World War II and served as principal of Main Street Grammar School for a period of two years. He was again called back in 1950 to serve a half year term to serve as principal of the same school.

Although he maintained his residence in Drakes Branch, Mr. Friend was a frequent visitor here where he established and maintained long time friendships and associations. He was here during the Christmas holidays and appeared hale and hearty for a man of his advanced years, friends recalled today.

Several generations of school children came under his tutelage and supervision. Father and son and mother and daughter today venerated his memory with deep respect and esteem.

Funeral rites were held from the Drake Branch Presbyterian Church, in which he held membership, on Monday at 10 a.m. The services were conducted by the Rev. R. R. Ramsey. Interment was in the Mount Horeb Presbyterian Church cemetery at the Grottoes.

Mr. Friend was a native of Charlotte County, having been born there on July 6, 1866, shortly after the Surrender at nearby Appomattox. His parents were the late Mr. Robert Morton Friend and Mrs. Berry Henderson Friend. He married the former Miss Martha Stratton.

Surviving are a wife, a brother, Joseph G. Friend, and two sisters, Miss Susie Friend, and Miss Eliza H. Friend, all of Drakes Branch.
