Born to Enos and Elizabeth Chadwick Barto.
He was a Civil War Veteran, who at the age of 33 years, left his bride and young daughter, Clarissa, to enroll in North Madison, Indiana, the 82nd Regiment - Indiana Infantry, Co. A.; serving the union army, beginning on Aug 30, 1862. He was dismissed June 8, 1863 and listed as a disabled veteran.
He made his living as a cooper.
He married to Deborah Marshall, Jan. 22, 1859 in Clinton Co, IN. Children were: Clarrissa A (Clara), James W., Ida May, and George.
They lived in Jefferson Co, Indiana, at the beginning of their married life. After he was dismissed from duty, they returned to Frankfort, Indiana area for many years, going to Kokomo, Indiana for a short period of time, but listed on the 1880 census, there. They returned to Clinton County and lived their lives on Armstrong Street, Frankfort, Indiana.
