Services for Willie J. "Beak" Shafer, 80, of Slaton will be at 1 p.m. Monday in Englunds Funeral Home Chapel with Cleve Kerby officiating.

Burial will be in Englewood Cemetery.

He died Friday, Jan. 18, 2002.

He was born July 27, 1921, in Lubbock County. He attended the Posey school and Slaton High School. From 1938 to 1942, he was employed by the Santa Fe Railroad before entering the U.S. Navy in spring 1942. He served aboard the USS Dixie and was discharged in 1946.

He returned to Lubbock County and farmed there and in Lynn County. He raised race horses and raced them in Ruidoso, N.M. He was a past member of the American Quarter Horse Association. He retired from farming in 1968.

He married Mildred Schum in November 1941. She died Aug. 27, 1982. He married Ophie Norris in July 1983.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Diane Gutheinz of Richardson and Linda Shafer of Fontanell, Iowa; and two grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials to the Alzheimer's Foundation.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
