Duane Paul Kahler was born on April 25, 1943 in Burke, SD to Theodore and Ella (Engelhart) Kahler. He was the third of five children. He developed a love for horses as a child that continued through his adult life. Duane loved to ride horses and one of his favorites was named "Trigger". He would on occasion ride a calf too, if he knew his dad wouldn't find out. He also enjoyed fishing both as a child and an adult.

In 1962 Duane married Diane Odenbach and they moved around the local area where Duane worked for several farmers and ranchers as a hired hand. He also drove truck for Sands Construction, worked at the Dallas Elevator, drove maintainer for the county, worked for the City of Dallas, and for the Young family. It was only in more recent years that he farmed for himself. Through all Duane's endeavors he always put up hay and he always had horses.

Duane died January 8, 2013 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD.

Duane is preceded in death by his parents, a brother Joe, a baby sister Fay, and his grandson Kirk.

Duane is survived by his three children, four grandsons; two sisters, a sister-in-law and by many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
