Herbert Irvin Birchfield, 76, of Havana, IL, passed away at Mason District Hospital in Havana at 5:07 a.m. on Thursday, May 23, 2013.

He was born October 4, 1936 in Havana to Dewey and Minnie Towery Birchfield.

He married Sandra Trent on June 26, 1960 in Havana.

Mr. Birchfield is survived by his wife, Sandra, of Havana, one son, Trent Anthony "Tony" (Janice) Birchfield of Cuba, IL and one daughter, Amy Jo (Brian) Ley of Havana as well as three granddaughters, one step-granddaughter, one step-grandson, one step-great-granddaughter and three step-great-grandsons.

Also surviving are two sisters, Betty Hummel of Canton, IL and Martha Brown of Springfield, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents.

After graduating high school, Mr. Birchfield went into the construction business with his father. He then joined the U. S. Army and was stationed in Alaska for two years. When he returned home, he worked for Otis Elevator Company in Chicago for five years.

He then worked for the USPS as a Mail Carrier for 28 years before retiring in 1996. While delivering mail, Herb was known for his companion, Maggie the Mail Dog, who accompanied him on his delivery route.

His favorite pastime was playing pool.

Funeral services will be held at Hurley Funeral Home in Havana at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 25, 2013 with visitation two hours prior to the services.

Cremation will follow the services and burial will be held at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Havana, IL at a later date. Rev.
Daniel Swihart will officiate.

Memorial contributions may be made to his granddaughters for their college education, Mason County Pets Without Parents or First Baptist Church.
