On 13 June 1898, Tampa, Florida; Nathaniel B. Adsit enlisted as a Private in Troop C of the 1st US Volunteer Cavalry Regiment (The Rough Riders). From 20 to 24 July 1898, Nathaniel was sick in quarters. On 26 July to 1 August, he was absent with leave. A letter dated 6 August from Buffalo, New York was received from his father that reported that Nathaniel passed away at his home from Typhoid Fever (Muster Papers). Troop C was one of four Troops ordered to remain at Tampa, Florida while the rest of the Rough Rider Troops invaded Cuba.
