The Bakersfield Californian, January 22, 1999
OBITUARY
Robert Birchfield
car salesman

The car-selling business has gone through many changes over recent decades, and Robert Birchfield withstood them all.
He owned and operated Birchfield's car lot in Bakersfield for 48 years. Birchfield died Thursday at age 69, but the business at 27th and Chester Avenue will stay a family business.
"His whole passion was the operation of the business to the exclusion of any other hobbies,:" said Robert Birchfield, Jr., who will take over the small lot - the third generation of Birchfields to do so.
You could say Birchfield was born to sell cars. He had worked the business with his father. Various family members also worked in the industry and he married a woman whose family sold cars in Florida, his son said.
The elder Birchfield literally worked at the business just about every day. He enjoyed dealing with people and had a knack for being able to connect with anyone from any walk of life, Birchfield said.
"Very few small businesses can survive with the competition of big conglomerates,: said Birchfield, who virtually grew up at the lot and sold his first car at age 12.
The business changed with the time, specializing in whatever the current appetite for cars was - muscle cars in the 1960s and "70s, imports after that and then the pickups and sport utility vehicles, popular today, Birchfield said.
"The cars are very indicative of the times,:" he said.
The business depended on repeat customers who knew the family.
He died of cancer after battling the disease with a passion for six years, Birchfield said.
There will be no visitation. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Canyon Hills Assembly of God.
Interment will follow in Union Cemetery.
