This is a Cenotaph, as Major Holland's remains were never recovered. Robert William Holland was a native of Nebraska, a son of Elizabeth and James F. Holland. He was working as an Engineer in the petroleum industry in New Mexico when he entered the Armed Forces on Nov 10, 1942. He had been a reserve officer. He was a member of the 26th Squadron, 11th Bomb Group, 7th Army Air Corps in Guam when he flew out on Feb 10, 1945; he was reported MIA on Apr 19, 1945 and listed as KIA over the Pacific on Feb 19, 1946.
He had married Helen Marie Packman of Salt Lake City, Utah while on Leave on May 29, 1941. There were no children from their marriage. She would not remarry until 1947.
Major Holland was awarded the Purple Heart Medal, Silver Star Air Medal, Distinguished Flying Cross and additional Army Awards.
His remains were never recovered but there is a 2nd cenotaph at Honolulu Memorial Courts of the Missing in Honolulu, Honolulu Co., Hawaii.
