Raymond S. Hovis YORK Raymond S. Hovis, 97, died on Wednesday, February 15, 2006, at Dallastown Nursing Center.

He was the husband of Mary E. (Leader) Hovis of York. Mr. and Mrs. Hovis observed their 73rd wedding anniversary on August 27, 2005.

Born in York on February 27, 1908, he was the son of the late Harry E. and Pervilla (Gladfelter) Hovis.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday at the Etzweiler Funeral Home, 1111 E. Market St., York, with the Rev. Diane G. Wenthe officiating. A viewing will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Salem Union Cemetery, Jacobus.

Mr. Hovis was a retired florist who owned and operated the former Raymond Hovis Flower Shop in York Township, along with his wife. He taught in a oneroom school in York Township, in the junior high school in Phoenixville, and later in Millersville at the primary, junior high school, and college levels. He was also associated with Guy A. Leader and Sons, Inc. before establishing the florist business in 1951. He graduated from York High School in 1925, received his elementary certification from Millersville Normal School in 1927, a B.S. Ed from Millersville State Teachers College in 1931 and a M.Ed from the Pennsylvania State University in 1935. He completed all course work for an Ed. D. at the University of Pennsylvania. He was a member of the State Teachers College Faculties Association and served as its President in 1948. He was a member of the school board that eventually became the Dallastown Area Joint School Board from 1952 to 1955. He was a member of the Board of Trustees of Millersville State College and served as President of the Board from 1957 to 1965.

Mr. Hovis is survived by two sons, Raymond L. Hovis of York and Guy L. Hovis of Easton; a daughter, Susan L. Hovis of Red Lion; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Beulah Stein of York. www.etzweiler.com
