Civil War Confederate Brigadier General. At the start of the Civil War, he was a lawyer in practice, when he enlisted and was appointed Lieutenant Colonel in the 4th Tennessee Infantry. Promoted Colonel in command, he led the 4th Tennessee in actions at Shiloh and Murfreesboro. In July 1863, he was promoted Brigadier General and fought at Chattanooga and in the Atlanta campaign. On November 30, 1864, at the Battle of Franklin, Tennessee, he was wounded and died on the field.
