Walter F. Adkins, St., 76, of 2106 S. Ralston, Independence, died Monday at the Veterans hospital here. He was born in Hinton, W.Va., and lived in Neosho, Mo., 21 years before moving to Independence three years ago. Mr. Adkins was employed 15 years as a shoemaker for the Vase-Bristol Shoe Company, Neosho, retiring in 1961. He was a World War I Army veteran. He was a member of Independence Masonic Lodge No. 76. Mr. Adkins was a member of the Fairmount Christian Church. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Thora J. Adkins of the home; a son, Walter F. Adkins, Jr., Kerrville, Tex., three brothers, Hayes S. Adkins, and Oliver T. Adkins, both of Milwaukee, and Oscar Adkins, San Jose, Calif.; two stepsons, Kale Payne, 9620 Linwood, Independence, and Dale Payne, Anchorage, Alaska, and three grandchildren. Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Ames, Iowa municipal cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 o'clock tonight at the Speaks Chapel.
