Amanda was the daughter of Richard Vincent Carroll of Washington, D. C. and Mary Ann DeGear of New York. The family lived in Ohio before moving to Jersey County, Illinois around 1834.

Amanda married William Wesley Smith, Sr. on 08 Sep 1853 in Jersey County. Like the rest of William's family, they soon moved to Calhoun County.

They were the parents of at 8 children. He was a farmer and also a traveling Methodist preacher.

William served in the Civil War as a wagoner for the 16th Illinois Infantry. He was captured and sent to Andersonville Prison. While a POW, he became sick and, although he survived the war, suffered from complications of his illness for the rest of his life.

William died in 1881 at the age of 48.

Amanda and William's oldest son, George, went on to become a doctor; Thomas, was a preacher; and Richard was a high school science teacher for over 50 years.

Children from first marriage: 5 sons, 3 daughters.

Amanda married a widower named William Love on 29 Nov 1885 in Calhoun County, Illinois. He was a native of Virginia and was a farmer in Calhoun County.

Amanda's second husband died in 1903.

Widowed for a second time, Amanda then lived with her son, Fletcher Smith, and his family.

At the time of her death, Amanda was 85 years, 4 months and 29 days old. She was buried on 08 Jun 1918.
