Like his father, L. Earl Westervelt was better known by his middle name. An only child, he grew up in the apartment behind his father's drug store on West Second Ave at Hunter in what is now Columbus' "Victorian Village". Earl joined his father behind the pharmacist counter after completing a degree at The Ohio State University. Earl was like his father, kind and gracious. Earl and his wife Mary had one son, Douglas. The couple moved to West Henderson Road in Clintonville where they lived for the remainder of their lives.
