Dr. David Stanley Goodenough, of Mattapoisett, died at Tufts/New England Medical Center in Boston on Monday, August 29, 2005. He was the husband of Jacquelyn Weber Goodenough. They had been married for 59 years.

Dr. Goodenough was born in Norwich, Connecticut on January 17, 1922 the son of Reverend Giles Frederic and Virginia Davis Goodenough. He was educated in Connecticut schools graduating from Ellsworth Memorial High School in South Windsor in 1940. He attended the University of Vermont and the University of Connecticut prior to World War II.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1942 and served as an aerial navigator with the 15th AAF in Italy. Lt. Goodenough participated in 17 missions for which he received the Air Medal with two oak Leaf Clusters. After the war, he returned to the University of CT graduating in 1947 with a B.S. degree in Psychology. He then attended graduate school at Purdue University receiving a Ph.D. in clinical psychology in 1951. In 1960, he was awarded the Diploma of the American Board of Professional Psychology.

Since graduation, he has worked at various hospitals in Indiana, Iowa, Pennsylvania, and Massachusetts. Prior to this retirement in 1980, he was Chief of the Psychology Service at the VA Medical Center in Brockton. He also had been active as an educator, teaching at Indiana and Purdue Universities and for over thirty years taught a graduate course in Education at Bridgewater State College.

In addition, Dr. Goodenough had been active in the Greater New Bedford Community. He served for six years on the Mattapoisett School Committee and the committee that built the original Old Hamondtown School. He served as Deacon of the Mattapoisett Congregational Church and was a former member of the Interchurch Council of Greater New Bedford's Board of Directors. In 1987, he was the recipient of the Sydney Adams Annual Award for outstanding service to the community of New Bedford.

Survivors include his widow, two daughters, Marsha Lee Steckbauer and her husband, Ron Steckbauer of California, and Kriselyn Brammer, of Mattapoisett; a son, Dr. David Jonathan Goodenough and wife Dianne of Maine; six grandchildren, Juliane Milburn of Virginia, Jonathan Lorraine of California, Shaundra Goding of Connecticut, Adam Goodenough of New York, Jordan Brammer of Maine, and Ryan Goodenough of Maine, and four great-grandchildren.

His Memorial Service was held at Saunders-Dwyer Mattapoisett Home for Funerals, 50 County Road Mattapoisett. His family will receive guests prior to the service. Interment private.
