YORKTOWN, VA. - H. Leslie "Abby" Abernathey, 62, found peace and comfort in the arms of our Lord Jesus Christ as he left us Thursday, Nov. 7, 1996.

He was a native of Gloucester County and had been a Peninsula resident for over 40 years. He retired as a general foreman in Department X-36 from Newport News Shipbuilding with 38 years' service.

He was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather and a member of Providence United Methodist Church.

He was a son of the late Charles H. and Sadie L. Abernathey, and son-in-law of Mr. and Mrs. Cecil M. Booker of Gloucester.

Survivors include his beloved wife of 44 years, Opal B. Abernathey; daughters and sons-in-law, Wanda A. and Jack M. Kissinger of Hampton and Collenne A. and John A. Dunkailo of Smithfield; son and daughter-in-law, Leslie Dale and Lucy Abernathey of Warsaw; five grandchildren, Christopher M. Baker, Leslie B. Baker, Kenneth B. Abernathey Jr., Jamie M. Abernathey and Jessica Ovard; two great-grandsons, Dylan and Ryan Baker; four sisters, Anne A. Henshaw, Bessie C. Emory, Virginia A. Heywood and Kathryn A. Lemon, all of Gloucester; and two brothers, George W. Abernathey of Winston-Salem, N.C., and C. Aaron Abernathey of Gloucester.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Weymouth Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 11, in Providence United Methodist Church, 113 Old Dare Road, Yorktown, by the Rev. David Forrest and assisted by the Rev. Mark Johnson. Interment will follow in Parklawn Memorial Park, Hampton.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 303 Butler Farm Road, Suite 106-A, Hampton 23666; or to Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters, 601 Children's Lane, Norfolk 23507, in Mr. Abbernathey's Memory.
