Fred J. Britz, age 92, passed away on May 14, 2013. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Betty Britz, to whom he was married for almost 70 years. He is survived by his son Michael Britz (Connie Britz), daughters Gayellen Richter (Ron Richter) and Cathy Adams (Robert Adams). His much loved and admired Grandchildren are Robert James Adams, Michael John Adams, Elizabeth Catherine Adams and Adrienne Michelle Patton (Evan Patton) with two Great-grandchildren – Kenley Makya Patton and Kailyn Riley Patton.
Fred was a 1937 graduate of Thomas Edison High School and later attended classes at St. Mary's University, the University of Texas at Austin and was privileged to attend Executive Management programs at the University of Houston and the University of California at Los Angeles.
Fred commenced his career at Kelly AFB in 1940, which began his almost 42 years of much honored service to the U.S. Air Force and his country. After serving in the Navy from 1945-1946, he returned to Kelly where he eventually became Chief of the Specialized Repair Division and was presented the Air Force Logistics Command Meritorious Civilian Service Award by General E.W. Rawlings for his "Outstanding Leadership" which resulted in great monetary and manpower savings for the Air Force. He subsequently became the Chief of Production Control of the Kelly Directorate of Maintenance with its almost 20,000 personnel. Fred was next assigned to head the Kelly AFB Civil Engineering Division with responsibility for all Base maintenance and construction.
In this capacity, and as a member of the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce Public Works Committee, he played a major role in obtaining State and City approval of the multi-lane "Kelly Access Road" which leads to the base and was named General Hudnell Drive. Additionally, he was presented another Air Force Logistics Command Civilian Meritorious Service Award by General Mark E. Bradley, Jr. for "He (Fred Britz) introduced a philosophy of management never before available to Civil Engineering activities, which is now used throughout the Air Force Logistics Command." Fred was next assigned by the Kelly AFB Commander to be the Deputy Director of Air Force Special Weapons.
On 15 Jan. 1965, then Secretary of the Air Force (Eugene Juchert) stated, "This Department places special trust and confidence in the integrity and ability of Fred Britz, Jr. who has been appointed Deputy Director, Directorate of Special Weapons with all the privileges and responsibilities pertaining to that position." It was in this position that the Secretary of the Air Force; Harold Brown, presented the prestigious Air Force Exceptional Service Award to Fred. The Secretary stated "In recognition of his exceptional performance as Deputy Director of Special Weapons, San Antonio Air Material Area from Sept. 1962 to April 1967.
Mr. Britz's contributions to the logistic support of nuclear weapons, Military Re-Entry Vehicles, and Military Space Programs and the resolution of critical problem areas through consistent application of exceptional managerial abilities have enhanced operational capabilities for nuclear weapons and support forces. His outstanding leadership and devotion to duty reflect credit upon himself and the civilian employees of the United States Air Force." Fred retired as Deputy Director of Distribution with responsibility for receiving, warehousing and worldwide shipping for all Air Force commodities managed by Kelly AFB.
During his career, Fred was honored as a nominee for "The Federal Employee of the Year," the "Arthur Flemming Award," and the"National Service League Career Service Award". Fred was a three time Worthy Patron of Adah Chapter No. 49, Order of the Eastern Star and a 67 year member of Anchor Lodge No. 424, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons.
