John H. Buchanan was the son of John Buchanan and Elizabeth Ann (Rowlett)Buchanan. He married Harriet M. Cumbee/Cumby, daughter of Thomas and Eliza (Childress) Cumbee/Cumby. John and Harriett had 9 children (one of whom is William Henry Buchanan, who is also buried in this cemetery). John was a Private in Co. E, 59th Virginia Infantry during the "War Between The States". John was also a Confederate POW at Roanoke Island, N.C. for a brief time. John served the entire length of the war and spent much of his duty in and around Richmond. John died of heart disease in 1896 and is buried at Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery, Halifax Co., VA.
