Born in Providence, he was a son of the late Benedetto and Antonietta (Altamura) Mottola.
Alfred was the devoted father of Frederick M. Mottola of Tuscon, AZ, Steven H. Mottola of Warwick, Karen R. DeGraide of Coventry and Susan M. Wiggins of West Greenwich; loving grandfather of Brenda Silvia, Brian Mottola, Michael DeGraide, Peter Mottola, David Mottola, Sara Mottola, Megan Mottola and Nicole Wiggins; devoted great grandfather of Mark Mottola, Domenic DeGraide and Jacquelyn Mottola. He was the brother of Vincent Mottola, Dora Grassini and the late Rosa "Rose" Totolo, Olindo "Lindy" Mottola, Giovannina "Jennie" Herchen and twin sisters, Vincenza and Rosa Mottola.
Mr. Mottola served in the RI Air National Guard as a fulltime Maintenance Technician for over 33 years before retiring in 1979. He was a charter member of the 152nd Observation Squadron, RI Air National Guard, enlisting in 1939 at T.F. Green Airport. He was an Army Air Corps veteran in WWII, serving in the European theatre of operation, receiving a number of decorations in his military career of over 39 years.
He was a life time member of the VFW Post #272 of Warwick, of the American Legion Post #74 of West Warwick, of the Non Commissioned Officers Club at Quonset Point ANG base, and of the Retired Enlisted Association. Mr. Mottola was also a life time member of the Warwick Lodge of Elks #2196 since 1975.
His funeral will be held Saturday, May 18, at 8 am from the Thomas & Walter Quinn Funeral Home, 2435 Warwick Ave. with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 am in St. Clement Church, Long Street. Burial with military honors in RI Veterans Cemetery, Exeter. Visiting hours Friday 4-8 pm.
In lieu of flowers, contributions to Home & Hospice Care of RI, 1085 North Main Street, Providence, RI 02904, would be appreciated.
