Cathy Charlane Newby, 44, daughter of Clyde and Billy Vandervort Cook, was born March 8, 1952, at Fort Jackson, S.C. She died May 4, 1996, at her home at Hartshorn after a long battle with cancer.

She married Dennis Gene Newby Sept. 2, 1972, at Valley Center Baptist Church at Hartshorn. They had two children.

Mrs. Newby was a member of the Valley Center Baptist Church, where she was church clerk for 20 years and served as director of Vacation Bible School.

She was Current Township clerk, bookkeeper for Salem Livestock Auction, sold insurance and jewelry and worked for a time for Angelica Uniform Factory and the Missouri Division of Family Services. She and her husband operated Newby Auction Service.

Surviving are her husband, Dennis, of the home at Hartshorn; one daughter, Heather Woolsey of Arroll; one son, Heath of the home; her parents of Hartshorn; two sisters, Linda Kirkman of Summersville and Judy Barton of Mountain View; and one brother, Keith Cook of Jefferson City.

Services were May 6 at the Valley Center Baptist Church at Hartshorn with the Rev. Lawrence Kennon and the Rev. Ray Clanton officiating. Burial was in the Valley Center Cemetery at Hartshorn under the direction of Duncan Funeral Home of Summersville. Memorials may be made to Community Hospice.
