Hannah Susannah Adams was the last of 11 children born to Samuel Adams and Susannah (Schobert) Adams. She married James Riley Norman on December 27, 1857 in Clayton County, Iowa, and they soon moved to Dodge County, Minnesota and began to raise a family.

Three children were born to James and Hannah: Hattie Elizabeth in 1862; Wesley in 1863 (died in 1866); and Samuel Nickolas in 1866.

James Riley Norman served with the 1st Minnesota Volunteer Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. Not long after he returned from the war the Norman family moved to Franklin County, Iowa. Ten years later the family moved again, this time to Hebron, Nebraska, where James and Hannah lived the remainder of their lives.
