Bruce enlisted in the United States Army on July 17, 1942, at Lubbock, Texas. His brother, Edward, also served during World War II as a member of the United States Marines in the Southern Pacific theater. PFC Bruce served with the 101st Airborne and was among the first paratroopers to land in France on D-Day. Wounded shortly thereafter, he was back in England by July 1944. Honorably discharged December 5, 1945, he then returned to his family's home in Amarillo.
He married Wanda Joyce Stroud (abt 1949). She followed him in death in December, 1999.
