Signe O. Housker, 85, of Mabel, died Friday, May 10, 2013, at the Green Lea Manor Nursing Home in Mabel.

She was born May 1, 1928, in Spring Grove to Sverre and Emma (Skorgen) Aasum. Her family moved to a farm near Riceford, Minn., where she attended grade school.

She attended the Mabel High School, graduating in 1946. Signe then moved to Rochester, where she attended the Kahler School of Nursing and worked at Colonial Hospital.

On Oct. 23, 1948, she married Bernard Housker at the Hesper Lutheran Church in Hesper, Iowa. They farmed in Preble Township, Fillmore County.

She was active in Scheie Lutheran Church, WELCA and Anna Circle for many years, serving as WELCA president. She was Sunday School superintendent, Luther League advisor, and AAL/Thrivent secretary-treasurer.

She and Bernard were also active in Sons of Norway Valheim Lodge 364 in Spring Grove for many years until his death in 1987.

In 1993, Signe moved to a residence in Mabel until 2009 when, due to declining health, moved into Green Lea Manor Nursing Home.

Her hobbies included flowers and gardening, counted cross-stitch, genealogy and corresponding with and entertaining friends and relatives.

Survivors include two children, Carol Ann (Scott) Christensen of Fort Collins, Colo., and Robert (Terese) Housker of Mabel; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Beverley Aasum of Caledonia; a brother-in-law, Harry Housker of Mabel; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, twin brother, Sidney, and a sister-in-law Barbara.

Funeral services were May 14 at the Scheie Lutheran Church in rural Mabel with the Rev. Mary Waudby officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.

The Mengis Funeral Home in Mabel assisted the family with arrangements.
