He was born in 1839 as Pieter Tuinstra in the country village Surhuisterveen, municipality Achtkarspelen, in the northeastern part of the Dutch northern province Friesland, son of the 48 years aged laborer Ritske Rapkes Tuinstra (1790-1874) and the 19 years younger Riemkjen Joukes Loonstra (1810-1896).

Farm hand Pieter Tuinstra married on 24 May 1863 in Marum, in the western part of the Dutch northeastern province Groningen at the age of 23 years to Maaike Bakker, who was 23 years aged too.

On 30 July 1863 their son Ritske Tuinstra was born in Marum. Pieter is then 24 years aged and a laborer.
Five weeks after Ritske's birth, on 10 September 1863, his mother and Pieter's wife Maaike Bakker died in Marum at the age of still 23 years.
Their only child Ritske Tuinstra died in 1940 in Chicago, after emigrating in 1910 with his wife and three children.

Laborer Pieter Tuinstra remarried on 4 June 1870 in Marum, Groningen at the age of 30 years to the three years younger Bauktje Hoogstra.

They had the following children:

Truck gardener Peter died in 1919 at 11112 Halsted Street, where he resided during the latest 10 years of his life, in the southern part of Chicago, Illinois, at the age of 80 years from an organic heart disease. His son Wiebe Tuinstra, who was residing at the same address, declared Peter's death. His widow Bauktje died in 1923 in Chicago, Illinois at the age of 80 years too.
